Susanne Hare (Lawson) (1945- )

Susanne Hare was born in Guelph, Ontario in 1945. She has created art for most of her life, making jewelry, hangings, designing and painting in her teens. She moved to Vancouver in the early ’70s and opened two galleries for art and metalwork in Gastown: “Ironmongers” and “Metalmorphosis”.

After several years, she moved to Long Beach on Vancouver Island. Her art was shown in group shows at the original Wickaninnish Inn ,as well as other events, and was displayed and for sale in local galleries.

Having lived on the west coast of Canada for over 40 years now, Susanne has produced many metal hangings, paintings, jewellery, cards, posters and other artwork in her home and studio. She has shown and sold her art in galleries across the western coast of British Columbia, opened an artist’s co-op, and maintained a gallery-museum in Tofino to show and sell her own work as well as that of local First Nations artists.

Susanne was commissioned to create a large copper piece called Ocean Dance for the Wickaninnish inn’s On the Rocks Lounge: dedicated to the wild Pacific salmon, it is a piece that represents the movement of the ocean, water, fish, kelp and other marine life in a lightly abstract form. Her metal sculpture Water is featured in the window of SoBo Restaurant downtown.

Susanne has blended her art and her life as a mother of four with her love for the wilderness and wildlife of the coastal lands and waters. She was also co-chair of the Canadian Environmental Network for two years.

Susanne lives surrounded by deer, eagles, ravens, raccoons, osprey, whales, seals, sea liions, and a myriad of other life on Vancouver Island, itself covered in old-growth forests, layered in spiritual ancestry and culture of the local First Nations of the Nuu-chah-nulth Peoples.

Susanne’s newsletter Solutions is about living in the wild, on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, ancient forests, wolves, cougars, wild storms, and living alone on the edge: https://susannelawson.substack.com
