Tofino Arts & Culture Walks Acknowledgements
Tofino Arts & Culture Walks are an initiative of Tofino Arts Council in partnership with Tofino Clayoquot-Heritage Society. We gratefully acknowledge our funders: Digital Strategy Fund, Canada Council for the Arts, Arts & Culture Grant, Clayoquot Biosphere Trust, District of Tofino, and Tofino Tourism.
We gratefully acknowledge that this interactive digital audio tour was produced in Tofino, BC (Načiks), which is situated on the tip of the Esowista Peninsula, within the traditional Ha-Houthlee (territory) of the Tla-o-qui-ahtFirst Nation and within their Tribal Parks. It is bordered, to the north, by the territories of the Ahousaht and Hesquiaht peoples.
We would like to extend a very special thanks to all the artists, curators, local residents, and cultural advisors, who so generously shared their stories and their knowledge.
Most of these interviews were conducted during the pandemic, following CoVid-19 safety protocols when recorded outside in person via an H5 Zoom handy recorder, and most frequently conducted online using the Anchor™ app. All interviews for the Downtown and MUP Art Walks were conducted by Erin Linn McMullan, Fresh Horses.
Sound production, music and sound FX, and voiceover recording was completed in Courtney, BC by Rob Crowston, WordNoise and voiced by Doreen Copeland. We respectfully acknowledge that the land we gather on is on the Unceded Traditional Territory of the K’ómoks First Nation, the traditional keepers of this land.
Downtown Culture Walk Additionally Acknowledges:
This heritage tour is a joint initiative between Tofino Arts Council and Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum. The content is based on Historic Tofino: a walking tour by Adrienne Mason. The kernel of this book began as a brochure, A Walk in Time, produced by Tofino’s Community Mapping Project in 1996. Jan Brubacher and Jennifer Steven researched and wrote the original brochure. The written content relies on interviews and historical research by author Adrienne Mason.
The oral history interviews with Joe Martin, with Moses Martin present, Lois Warner, and the Sadler family, featured in this Downtown Culture Walk were conducted by Ava Hansen, then Executive Director of Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum, who also provided key project support. Sean McLorie interviewed Roland Arnet as part of the “Tofino Through Time” series.
The local history of Japanese-Canadian residents was courtesy of the exhibition, The Nikkei Residents of Clayoquot Sound and Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum.
A special thanks to the books, Tofino and Clayoquot Sound: A History by Margaret Horsfield, Tonquin: The Ghost Ship of Clayoquot Sound and Hera: The Fire Ship of Clayoquot Sound by David W. Griffiths, and historicplaces.ca.
We gratefully acknowledge support from Clayoquot Biosphere Trust’s Arts & Culture grant, Tofino Tourism, Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum, and Canada Council for the Arts’ Digital Strategy Fund for overall support of the Tofino Arts & Culture Walk.
